Descartes’ Concept of Thinking
  • 이현복

초록

If cogito, ergo sum is the first principle of Descartes’ Philosophy, the concept of thinking(cogitatio) would be the most basic and central concept of his philosophy. I think Descartes used the concept of thinking in a multifaceted way. They are ‘thinking as a thinking substance or mind’, ‘thinking as the essence of the mind’, ‘thinking as modes of the thinking’, and ‘thinking as idea’. Descartes considers the previous two almost the same in that the mind and the thinking as the essence are only conceptually distinct. So in a strict sense, thinking is thinking as the essence of the mind, thinking as modes of it, and thinking as ideas. In this article, I examined thinking as modes and as ideas except thinking as the essence of the mind, explaining that the former is the thinking actions that the mind is immediately conscious of in itself, and the latter is all phenomena in the mind, including the former, as well as the desires, emotions, and images of things.
