초록
As the physical forms of package design such as excessive packaging is lately pointed out as one of the major causes of environmental destruction and pollution, it’s needed to improve the traditional approaches to package design. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine the theoretical background of the package designs of the traditional concept since the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century and that of new package designs of extended concept newly created by new technology since 2000 in an effort to compare the two sorts of package designs. In addition, domestic and foreign new package design cases were analyzed to determine how the convergence of package design and 3D printing technology took place to generate package designs of the new technology era. As a result, there were three aspects to the package design cases that utilized 3D printing: eco-friendly materials, flexible structural change, and aesthetic forms infused with originality. Eco-friendly materials could commonly be found all over the world including Europe, the United States and South Korea. The cases that flexible structural change could be found in Japan, and aesthetic forms that were infused with originality could be found mostly in Europe involving Italy and the United Kingdom. The aspects could be interpreted to be in line with the worldwide awareness of the gravity of environmental problems and the reflection of each country’s design identity. This study is expected to spread awareness of the functional and ethical roles of package design in the new technology era and to serve as a catalyst for research on how to apply them.
