Lee Seung-Hun is recognized as a poet who consistently and robustly embodies the aesthetics of avant-garde and formal exploration since the 1960s. His modernist poetics were not accidental or temporary but rather consciously and existentially sustained, which was exceptionally rare even for that time. Such consistent commitment of his contributes decisively to building a dimension of "aesthetic modernity" that is unfamiliar but necessary for the modernization of poetry in our time. Particularly, Lee Seung-Hun's poetic portraits will be remembered as a peak of modernism and an expansion process. His early poems focused on anxiety, death, interiority, existence, and self-identity. He demonstrates the process of moving from primitive "self-alienation" to "self-discovery" through "self-exploration." His poetry, which focuses on the interior rather than reality and on existence rather than action, can be said to showcase the process of maximizing aesthetic autonomy. As time went on, Lee Seung-Hun's poetry encountered Zen. By meeting the Buddhist orientation that seeks to dismantle binary oppositional systems and fixed ideas, he entered a new world of poetry. Based on this existential foundation, his final works, like familiar journals, establish a profound poetics through a simple and sincere portrayal of experience without any linguistic twists or decorations. Looking back at his poems and poetics, we are amazed by their vastness, consistency, and persistence. He was as sincere to himself and as fierce to his poetry throughout his life.
