A Grounded Theoretical Study on the Process and Typology of Juvenile Delinquency: Focusing on Social Capital of Family, School, and Friends

초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between youth delinquency and family, school, and the social capital of friends. For the study, 17 adolescents with at least one in-school discipline experience in the Seoul Metropolitan Area were selected for in-depth interviews. Subsequently, grounded theory was used to determine their juvenile delinquency process and type. As a result of the analysis, negative social capital in family and school, which is the 'lack of interaction with significant others', proved to accelerate the delinquency of adolescents and consequently, it was found to be the cause for delinquency. By determining juvenile delinquency types based on social capital, these in turn were further classified into the following subcategories: 'lack of discretion type' and 'mapping out type' with positive social capital, 'rebellious type' and 'avoidance type' with negative social capital. Each subtype showed different characteristics in the course of delinquency until reaching a habitual level. This study confirms that the response method should be changed accordingly, suggesting that the role of family, school, and friends in social capital plays a very important role in predicting the behavior of adolescents. Furthermore, the relationships with and among these groups can be effective for suppressing or even preventing juvenile delinquency.
