Study on Daodejing’s ‘You’

초록

The concept of ‘You’ on Daodejing has been interpreted in three different versions: the first version interprets ‘You’ as universal, the second one as action of ‘Dao’, the last one as ‘Dao’. All these three versions have problems, however. I will study on the cosmology characteristics of ‘Dao’ and seek to find a new method of interpretation of ‘You’ on Daodejing based on the fact that the concepts of ‘You’ in chapter 1 and chapter 40 of Daodejing are the same, and there is no logical error between the two chapters. ‘Dao’ is existence cause and essence basis of all things. ‘Dao ’is ‘Wu’ because Dao is being that has no shape and name, and at the same time, ‘Dao’ is ‘You’ because all things are beings that have their own shapes and names. Therefore, ‘Wu’ is both existence cause and essence basis. However, the method of this interpretation depends on how to interpret the mother and son’s relationship between ‘有(You)’and ‘萬物(All things)’ from ‘有名萬物之母’. ‘Dao’, essence basis, is the one that creates the essence of things not by order or force from outside, but by themselves inside naturally. That is to say, from individual being’s point of view, ‘You’ is the mother of all things, for all things are the ones that teach themselves. As Laozi regards ‘Dao’, which has no creative will and leadership, as the cause of universal phenomena, he develops the simple relationship of a creator and creatures between ‘Dao’ and ‘all things’ to the relationship between noumenon and phenomenon. With all these reasons, Laozi’s cosmology is cosmology with ontology.
