천연두, 그 아픔과 상실의 기억 -장혼(張混)의 「기척(記慽)」을 중심으로-

초록

Smallpox was too general and fatal disease in accordance with the ancient records. It was difficult to treat smallpox because of short period of outbreak. Moreover, the probability of misdiagnosis to other diseases was very high until the definite symptoms appeared. Thus, smallpox was the sad disease which people couldn't help staking their destiny to taboo or pray. “Gicheok” by Janghon described the actual prescription on smallpox in very details. It is the important data to examine the actual treatment on smallpox. He described the entire process from the first stage of smallpox observed in his grandson to his death in detail. Gicheok is significantly different from other records presenting several fragmentary episodes or furiously expressing emotions as being indulged into sorrow itself. As detailing the whole process of struggle against the disease, he objectively and cold-heartedly described the conflicts with a doctor, symptoms of the grandson, prescription and treatment. All endeavors were meaningless and only regret remained at the end of fierce struggle against the disease. The latter half of the records comprised mainly sense of loss and regret from the death of the grandson. Gicheok is enough to be the masterpiece in the literature of mourning because of the vivid description on the piercing sorrow after losing the grandson as well as on the pathetical endeavor of the grandfather who strived not to lose the grandson.
