Performance Evaluation of Integrated Heat Recovery Ventilation and Exhaust Fan (HRV-EA Fan) System in Residential Buildings

Global warming and the demand for energy efficiency have driven the adoption of highly insulated and airtight residential buildings. However, such designs can elevate indoor pollutant concentrations due to insufficient outdoor air supply for dilution. While heat recovery ventilation (HRV) systems are increasingly employed to reduce ventilation energy loads, conventional units operate independently and are not designed to provide make-up air during bathroom or kitchen exhaust fan operation. This study introduces an integrated ventilation strategy, termed the “HRV-EA fan system,” in which the HRV unit supplies make-up air in coordination with exhaust fan use. The system was installed in a sample residential unit, and performance was monitored for one year. Field measurements demonstrated significant improvements in indoor air quality (IAQ) and confirmed the system’s ability to deliver the required make-up air. The findings suggest that the HRV-EA fan system can effectively enhance IAQ and support the development of smart ventilation solutions for low-energy residential buildings.
