The purpose of this study is to define roles and required competencies of Korean Chief Learning Officer (CLO), who is a leader of HRD organization as well as a chief in charge. The Delphi method was conducted three times for this. The 35 CLO working in domestic businesses was selected as a group of experts and this study was performed. The totals of 28 responses were collected finally. From this study, the roles of Korean CLO can divided into a value creator of business renewal, a performance consultant of the organization, a builder of the learning organization, and a leader of HRD. The 24 required competencies related to the roles are drawn. The five core competencies, such as business acumen, strategic planning ability, networking, leadership skills and change management ability, are derived for performing CLO's roles successfully. The results of this study suggest that the roles of Korean CLO are laid emphasis on future value-creating for management, based on a changed management environment and business needs, and meeting the pluralized needs of clients offered HRD solutions, while HRD practitioners traditionally have done training, organizational development and career development based on job expertise. It is expected that the roles and required competencies of Korean CLO clarified through this study will be used as a basic data for accomplishing roles and responsibility, improving performance, and developing potential ability of CLO.
