“베토벤 계속 들어야 해?”: 영화 ≪헌트≫의 수사적 질문에 대한 음악학자의 변(辯)

“Now, do I have to keep listening to Beethoven?”: Musicologist’s Response to a Rhetorical Question in The Hunt

초록

“Now, do I have to keep listening to Beethoven?,” asks Crystal (Betty Gilpin) in Craig Zobel’s film The Hunt (2020). It is a rhetorical question, to be sure, but the purpose of this paper is to answer it seriously. I first analyze the Adagio movement of “Beethoven’s” (i.e., Mozart’s) Piano Concerto in A, K. 488 (1786) to show the ways in which the concerto comments on the scene and the theme of the film. As a ‘social discourse,’ I suggest, the concerto provides insights into understanding the relationship between Athena (Hilary Swank) and Crystal, or the “elite” liberals and the “deplorable” conservatives. I then move on to muse on the recent “events” in the North American musicological community, including cancel culture and a call-out to cancel Beethoven.
