길들여진 ‘운명’의 소리: 퍼셀의 《디도와 에네아스》(Dido and Aneas)

The Tamed Voice of ‘Fate’: Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aneas

초록

The opera Dido and Aeneas was created by Nahum Tate, the librettist and Purcell, the composer. Tate wrote the libretto based on Virgil’s Aeneid Chapter 4. Tate abstracts the vivid emotions expressed by Virgil and rewrites the story through the central theme of ‘fate’. Purcell reproduces this theme very efficiently through a musical device called a ground bass. What is interesting is that in this process, the attitudes of the male and female protagonists on the fate are reproduced differently both in libretto and music. Musical devices such as transposition and ground bass are used as effective devices to reveal the gender differences between these two characters.
