The Purpose of this study is to analyze the contents and principal attributes of the concept of ‘hospitality’, a new perspective of addressing migrants, to look at the level of awareness and hospitality of North Korean refugees from the perspective of hospitality, and to explore the applicability of hospitality to the refugees. The hospitality is an open attitude of willingly accepting strange migrants for the positive self-realization of me (us), and aims not to treat migrants by the standards of me (us) but to listen to their voices and welcome them readily from the viewpoint of the migrants. The hospitality refers to attitudes and actions based upon trans-boundaries, horizontality and conviviality, and these three areas are accorded with rights, communication and culture and social economy, respectively. Based on our society’s perception and attitude toward North Korean refugees, centering on the three properties of hospitality, trans-boundaries and conviviality, the level of hospitality has been found to be very low. Under these circumstances, this study took notice of the process of changing the perception of displaced persons as a means to raise the level of hospitality in our society toward North Korean refugees. From this perspective, this study plays up the necessity for our society to abandon its bias against North Korean refugees in their perception of North Korean refugees and try to understand the agony of North Korean refugees who have lost their homes in the North. Ultimately, this study contends that recognizing and accepting North Korean refugees gladly as they are can start with our everyday lives.
