The Marketplaces and Everyday Life in Tang Chang’an

Emulating Sui-Tang Chang’an, East Asian countries constructed their own capital city and capital city era had come to order in 7-8 centuries. Wherefore Chang’an was the symbol of city life at that time and diverse activities of the residents within Chang’an was meant to be the symbol of everyday life. This paper researched the appearance of the marketplaces where the residents in this capital city visited almost everyday as a representation of everyday life at that time. Putting the 110 wards with a high wall all around it, the residents of Chang’an was controlled by Tang government. Therefore some scholars expressed this capital city as a jail city. The residents only had freedom of everyday life for a time to get out of the residence ward from sunrise to sunset, to visit the marketplaces purchasing necessary goods and enjoy the sense of restricted freedom. Examining the space arrangement of capital city and two marketplace and every kind of residents control by market administration, this paper reviewed how to control the merchants and how to manage the marketplaces. Concretely analyzing the role of market administration, this paper represented the dynamics of market and tried to show the diverse figures of merchants living in Eastern Market and Western Market. Especially focusing the activities of “foreign merchants” lived in western marketplace and that neighboring wards, I emphasized the cosmopolitan city of Chang’an. And examining the various bazaar, this paper researched the various type of commodities sold in marketplaces between residents and merchants. Last but not least, market regulation system and time limit system collapsed and merchants expanded the market area into the surrounding of marketplaces.
