The Effect of Elementary Students' Perceived Parent Academic Involvement on Self-Regulated Learning: Achievement Goals as a Mediator

초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of parent academic involvement on children's self-regulated learning in elementary school students. Also this study was done to verify the mediating role of achievement goals in the relationship between parent academic involvement and children's self-regulated learning. The questionnaires were administered to 235 elementary school students. The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, academic information/guidance giving and respect for children positively affected self-regulated learning. Second, mastery goal and performance-approach goal had a positive effect on self-regulated learning. However, performance-avoidance goal had a negative effect on self-regulated learning. Third, The effect of academic information/guidance giving on self-regulated learning was completely mediated by mastery goal. It implied that positive parent academic involvement such as academic information/guidance giving increased children's mastery goal, therefore positively contributing to children's self-regulated learning. The implications of this study for academic counseling for elementary school students and their parents were discussed.
