Socioeconomic Factors of Mobility among People with Disabilities: A Study Using the National Survey of the Disabled Persons and Geo-location Data

초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to empirically examine mobility and to identify significant correlates of mobility among people with physical impairments. Method: The authors analyzed data from “The 2014 National Survey of the Disabled Persons” to test the effects of socioeconomic factors on mobility among people with physical disabilities, brain lesions, visual disturbance. In addition, geo-location tracking data collected from mobile devices of 63 study participants were also analyzed. Results: The analysis on the data from the 2014 National Survey of the Disabled Persons revealed that age, employment status, the severity of disability, and the type of disability were significant correlates of mobility among the study sample. The use of welfare services facilities was positively associated with the number of going out, but negatively with the level of discomfort when going out. The results from the exploratory analysis of geo-location data showed that employment status was significantly associated with mobility among the physically disabled. Conclusion: Policy measures need to focus on the improvement of mobility among people with disabilities, especially who are socioeconomically marginalized.
