An Exploratory Study on the Life of Youths in Poverty from a Bottom-Up Perspective

초록

This study begins with the recognition that the approaches to youths have been made dominantly focusing only on employment from policy-makers’ perspective. In this respect, this study explores the experiences and life of youths in poverty from their own voice. FGIs with eleven youths in poverty reveal that youths in poverty live in the present, with full of anxiety, dissatisfaction and distrust about unfair society and future. They also suffer from family-related problems such as debt from parents and conflicts with family members. Youths in poverty also have human capital-related problems such as lack of education, training and career, social structural problems such as low income and precarious jobs, psychological problems such as low accountability, helplessness and anxiety, and unstable housing. These multi-dimensional problems also work as barriers for youths to live decent lives. This study proposes practical and policy implications for youths with balance between employment and welfare from a bottom-up perspective.
