New synthetic routes to (+/-)-alpha-lycorane and (+/-)-1-deoxylycorine were exploited. The endo-cycloadduct of 3,5-dibromo-2-pyrone with styrene-type dienophile provided the pivotal intermediate for the syntheses of the titled natural products.
