초록
Tasan(茶山) left separate diaries, not included in his collected works, spanning from July 26, 1795, to June 6, 1797. These include “Geumjeong Illok”(「金井日錄」), “Jungnan Illki”「竹欄日記」), “Gyuyoung Illki”(「奎瀛日記」), and “Hamju Illok”(「含珠日錄」). Within these diaries lie Tasan’s intricate inner conflicts and struggles related to the Catholic issue of the time. Meanwhile, during this period, Tasan also produced works such as “Dosan Sasookrok”(「陶山私淑錄」), “Seoam Ganghakgi”(「西巖講學記」) and “Byeonbangso”(「辨謗疏」)“. By analyzing the background and significance of these writings, one can gain insight into the context of the four diaries. Notably, “Geumjeong Illok” chronicles Tasan’s tenure following his demotion to Geumjeong Chalbang(金井察訪) consequent to the botched apprehension of Father Joo munmo. During this juncture, Tasan fervently engaged in efforts towards the suppression of Catholicism and encountered profound discord with local scholars during the formulation of the Ganghak society. Despite the ostensibly factual nature of the diaries, Tasan’s entries inherently embody a highly politicized discourse. Epistolary exchanges, poetic compositions, and interpersonal encounters subtly convey layered subtexts and contextual nuances, warranting meticulous scrutiny to discern Tasan’s latent intentions. To achieve this, the reasons for Tasan’s demotion to Geumjeong Chalbang and King Jeongjo’s intentions were analyzed, and Tasan’s efforts and results for the Catholic crackdown were comprehensively reconstructed. Additionally, the fervent opposition from local scholars against the Ganghak society, conducted under the pretext of organizing Sungho Iik’s writings, and Tasan’s process of organizing them to fruition were examined with surrounding materials. Furthermore, through “Hamju Illok”, the subtext of “Byeonbangso”, written by Tasan in 1797, was also explored. In Chapter 4, the purposes and writing of the three works, “Dosan Sasookrok”, “Seoam Ganghakgi” and “Byeonbangso”. were examined. It was revealed that these three works were intentionally conducted to deviate from the criticism and slander related to Catholicism imposed on Tasan himself, rather than being purely scholarly works. Ultimately, Tasan’s four diaries were not mere factual recordings but highly political writings imbued with deliberate strategies. Despite attempts at self-censorship, they also served as records revealing Tasan’s apostasy against Catholicism and his inner thoughts. Moments associated with the Catholic issue portray Tasan’s transformation into a contradictory character, reflective of the contradictions of his era.
