A Study on the Effectiveness of the Science-Technology and Art Convergence STEAM Programme using Community Mapping

초록

In DeSeCo(Definition and Selection of Competencies) project, which is initiated by OECD from 1997, there are three key competencies for future generations to have: ‘competency to use tools interactively’ for knowledge information, ‘competency to interact in heterogeneous groups’ to resolve conflict with others’ and ‘competency to act autonomously’ that establish and act one's whole life planning. In this trend, Korea has emphasized STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program, focusing on integrated education that motivates academic interest, encourage comprehensive knowledge, and cultivate creativity. Using the community mapping tool in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), this study developed the STEAM programme of science-technology and art convergence for students to expand their knowledge into various topics beyond current curriculum in the context of region, society, and world. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the programme with pre-and post-test analysis based on the PISA2006 after its application on 4th year students at elementary school. Analysis results show that there is a significant effectiveness on academic interest, learning motivation, career development, attitude in science-technology and design. In particular, academic interest in science-technology and learning motivation and attitude in design showed statistically significant effectiveness. As a conclusion, this study indicates that the STEAM programme of science-technology and art convergence encourages students to acknowledge the value of science-technology and design, promote academic motivation, and cultivate creative ability to solve problems.
