초록

The Korean Enlightenment period was an important transitional phase in the development of the modern Korean language. During this time, Sino-Korean words introduced from Japan had a significant impact on the vocabulary changes of the era. After the opening of the ports, Japanese-style Sino-Korean words entered the Korean language in the form of either translation or transliteration. The shock of new civilization during the Enlightenment period led to the creation of many new terms, some of which are still in use today, while others have either undergone transformation or become obsolete. In particular, the Sino-Korean occupational designations introduced from Japan during the Enlightenment period reflect the social structure of the time and the process of modernization. Some of these terms are still in use today, while others have evolved into modern occupational designations. Studying the changes in these occupational designations is crucial to understanding the social changes in the Korean language and the influence of foreign civilizations. By examining the evolution of Sino-Korean occupational designations that emerged during the Enlightenment period, we can gain a deeper understanding of how changes in Korean social structure and the influx of foreign civilization have impacted the language. This study systematically collects and analyzes Sino-Korean occupational designations related to newly emerging professions during the Enlightenment period. To do this, we refer to Lee Han-seop's (2014) Dictionary of Korean Words Borrowed from Japanese to identify and select the newly coined occupational designations from the Enlightenment period as research subjects. Based on this, the study aims to analyze the patterns of change and factors behind the evolution of Sino-Korean occupational designations introduced from Japan during the Enlightenment period, shedding light on specific examples of vocabulary change in the Korean language and the corresponding social structure.
