초록
This study takes an exploratory approach to understanding and typologizing fun in the festival experiences. A qualitative content analysis was conducted using arousal, which reflects the degree of excitement and calmness of an emotion, and Intensity, which indicates the weight or depth of an emotion, as an analytical framework. The analysis, based on in-depth interviews with 17 festival participants and 109 online reviews of 21 festivals, yielded 20 subthemes and four dimensions. The four dimensions were named 'active fun', 'playful fun', 'immersive fun', and 'passive fun', respectively. ‘active fun’ refers to a state of physical and mental vitality; ‘playful fun’ is fun experienced through diverse play elements of the festival and where participants play freely like children regardless of social status or age; ‘immersive fun’ arises from deep emotional involvement achieved through deep engagement with the festival's atmosphere and activities; and ‘passive fun’ is experienced as restorative enjoyment through physical and mental relaxation and the attainment of a peaceful state. By defining four types of fun, the study proposes a multidimensional characterization of the fun experience at festivals, overcoming the limitations of the predominantly unidimensional approach of existing fun research in the festival field. Festival practitioners can design programs and operations to maximize each type of fun.
