The Immigrant's Communication Activity in the Cyber Community of the Multicultural Society

Along with influx of immigrants, Korea becomes rapidly a multicultural society. The immigrants use the Internet to communicate with their family and relatives left behind the home countries. They get information necessary to adapt to Korean society, maintain friendship and make new friends, escape from loneliness, etc. through cyber community activity. However, few research has been done in this field. In this respect, this study explores the immigrants' motivation of Internet use, its effect, cyber community activity, and characteristics of communication. A survey was administered with 103 residents in Seoul and suburban areas. It was found that the immigrants did not trust the cyber community. The motivation of Internet use was found: communication with family and/ relatives in their home country, leisure, acquisition of information on Korean society, stress release, fun or entertainment. The effect of Internet use included satisfaction with communication with family and/or relatives, leisure, make Korean friends, release from daily stress. The cyber community members felt stronger motivation and effect of communication with their family and/or relatives in their home country. The major factors influencing communication satisfaction were identified: communication motivation, trust in cyber communication, and the amount of mobile phone use. It meant that the stronger the communication motivation and trust in cyber community, and the more the amount of mobile phone bill were, the more they were satisfied. Policy implication was discussed.
