Secret entanglement between religion and the state: A critical assessment of Korea’s religious policy

초록

This paper seeks to reveal the current state of affairs with regard to the government’s support for religion in Korea. The Korean constitution clearly declares the principle of the separation of politics and religion. Nevertheless the government has been providing various policy benefits for religion ever since the First Republic. However, there has been virtually no public debate as to the legitimacy and validity of such religion support policies. Professional scholars of public administration as well as ordinary citizens in Korea have shown almost no interest in this matter. Due to the indifference and ignorance of most people, the government’s support for religion has been implemented covertly. This is a clear violation of democratic virtues and resource allocation efficiency. The most serious and tragic problem is that material support is no better than a lethal poison that corrupts religion. A simple questionnaire survey was carried out as part of the analysis to examine the validity of each individual subsidy program of the Religious Affairs Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
