Current and Future of Regenerative Medicine Research in Peripheral Nerve Injury

초록

Nerve grafting is essential when the extent of peripheral nerve injury is severe. Currently, autologous nerve grafting is the standard treatment, but it has significant limitations, including a limited number of donor sites with the additional risk of nerve damage at the donor site. Allogeneic nerve grafting is being explored as an alternative to address these challenges. On the other hand, it also has limitations, such as limited donor availability and high costs. Furthermore, allogeneic nerve grafting is considered insufficient to fully replace autologous nerve grafting in terms of the nerve regeneration outcomes. Numerous regenerative medicine studies are underway to overcome the limitations of autologous and allogeneic nerve grafting in peripheral nerve injury. This study examined the present and future of regenerative medicine research through a literature review.
