This paper proposes a precise respiration rate estimation algorithm based on an extended empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method. IR-UWB measurements are highly susceptible to other interferences including noise and multipath fading which makes the estimation accuracy deteriorate significantly. Existing methods rely on filter-based approaches and signal decomposition methods such as the EMD algorithm to restore the original signal from noisy measurements. Meanwhile, the conventional methods suffer from poor estimation accuracy because of the limited spectrum ranges. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposed the extended EMD algorithm which improves estimation accuracy by decomposing the signal over an expanded frequency range. Numerical evaluation using both simulations and experiments demonstrates that the proposed extended EMD algorithm outperforms the conventional EMD method in terms of estimation accuracy. Simulation results indicate that the proposed extended EMD algorithm achieves 19.05% improvement than the baseline EMD algorithm. In addition, by the experiment, the proposed extended EMD algorithm is verified to outperform 11.6% more accurate than conventional EMD algorithms.
