초록

This study is about the novelist Hyeon Gil-eon(1940-2020) to understand his fictions in 1980s, and the brief biography written under the premise “existence of a person is the universe itself and his/her life is the most detailed history”. Moreover, this study is the approach to Jeju in late 1940s through Hyeon Gil-eon. This study found three facts. First, Hyeon Gil-eon was born in the family residing in generations in Jeju for about 600 years. He was born, grew up and was hurt in Jeju. He is a Jeju resident(the outsider) deliberating and talking about Jeju during his entire life. Next, Hyeon Gil-eon observed the horrible violence during Jeju Massacre on April 3 and thought that testimony on tragedy which was disclosed to the world as the obligation of literature in his life. In this aspect, his awareness on creating fictions can be said to be a kind of narration on history. His factions strictly excluded the political responsibility issue. Such a naive awareness has the political nature by itself. His naive awareness came from the experience on Christianity and was expressed into the strong political color later. Finally, the life of Hyeon Gil-eon was generally transferred from a researcher to a novelist. As a researcher, he concentrated on the Jeju tale. The study on Jeju tale had significant impact on description method of a fiction as well as materials of fictions. Then, the research on Jeju tale was named ‘awareness of tale transmitter’ in this study. However, this study couldn’t find out the works of Hyeon Gil-eon in his young adulthood and summarize the bibliography of fictions in 1980s.
