현대소설에 나타난 전통음악의 형상화 연구 시론(試論)

초록

This study aims to examine how the Gayageum and its music are represented in Korean novels that feature the instrument as a central motif. For this purpose, nine modern Korean novels published between 1990 and 2022 were selected and analyzed with a focus on the ways in which the Gayageum is portrayed in literary narratives. The analysis focused on two aspects: the images associated with the Gayageum itself and the representations of its sound (Eum) and melody (Ak). The images of the Gayageum were classified into three categories: material and form, body and hands, and animals and nature. The representations of sound and music were categorized into four types: emotion and inner world, society and culture, memory and history, and worldview and cosmology. The findings show that the Gayageum is portrayed not only as a musical instrument but also as an aesthetic object and a symbol of traditional Korean culture. It is represented through human bodily elements such as hands, the chest, and breath, as well as natural images including the wind and butterflies, emphasizing the close relationship between the performer and the instrument. In addition, the sound of the Gayageum is frequently depicted through images of natural movement and living beings. The representations of the Gayageum’s sound and music express human emotions such as sorrow, longing, and love, while also symbolizing cultural values and national identity. Furthermore, the Gayageum functions as a medium for remembering history and conveying loss, and is portrayed as a transcendent entity that embraces the world and the cosmos.
