Chinese Socialism in the Era of G2: A Historical View on China’s Open Door and Reform Policy

초록

This paper reviews global academic perspectives to the rise of China, dividing their studies into a three issuespolitical system, economic development and international relations. One party state is partly interpreted as the traditional characteristics of Chinese political culture and also is said to be a kind of total war system carried over from wartime experience. While the political system is generally critically accepted, the economic development in China is highly evaluated in accordance with the prevailing revision to the conventional underestimation of the premodern Chinese economy. Some interpret the recent rise of Chinese economy as the renewal of their original leading status in the premodern world economy. Others expect that the Chinese economic model could be an alternative to the capitalist one, as a more resourcesaving and environmentfriendly one. Even in regard to the traditional tributary system centering China in Asia, not only Chinese scholars but also western counterparts have begun to emphasize the peaceful and rational aspects of this interstate system. Meanwhile, Korean academics, especially historians, express their concerns about the revival of Chinese imperialism. However, serious resources restriction in China continues to be a bottleneck to robust growth and attainment of G1 status in the near future.
