Human being is often infected by microorganism like bacterium, mold, yeast, and virus etc, in the living environment. The researches are active in antibacterial material containing various natural and inorganic substances which are tea extraction, chitosan, copper, zinc, etc, Since the public concern on sanitary sought and is ever increasing. Among them, silver has the most powerful antibacterial activity. In this study, coatings containing Ag colloids , Ag-SiO2 thin coatings, were prepared on soda lime glass substrates by the sol-gel process in order to apply the antibacterial activity. The sol was prepared from 1:0.2:3.75:2.2 molar ratios of Si(OC2H5)4:AgNO3:H2O:C4H10O2. HNO3 of 0.5N was used as hydrolysis catalyst controlled at PH 3. The highly transparent glassy film was successfully prepared by the dip-coating method. The film formations were characterized by ultraviolet-visible, infrared spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction between 100 C and 600 C. It showed that the optimum temperature for forming metal (Ag0) colloids in air was approximately 600 C.The antibacterial test was performed by FITI TESTING & RESEARCH INSTITUTE against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. It was found that the Ag-SiO2 coatings on soda lime glass by sol-gel processes showed high antibacterial activity. It is hoped that this technology can be applied to manufacture antibacterial glass
