Selecting “Living” Texts in the Classroom : A Grounded Theory Approach to Secondary Korean Language Arts

초록

This study aimed to theorize the beliefs and conditions that shape the process by which secondary school Korean-language arts teachers select texts beyond textbooks, using a grounded theory approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 middle- and high-school Korean-language arts teachers with more than 10 years of teaching experience, followed by open, axial, and selective coding. The findings indicate that the teachers recognized the limitations of textbooks and conventional instruction. Hence, they searched for, selected, and mediated “living” texts based on students’ lives, proficiency levels, and local contexts. These practices contributed to students’ growth and enhanced the teachers’ sense of efficacy, while also generating tensions under institutional constraints. This study is significant in theorizing secondary-school Korean-language arts teachers’ instructional practices for selecting texts beyond textbooks, which function as a form of support for students’ literacy practices.
