The differences between these respiratory viruses in the pathogenesis of wheezing in young children have not been clearly defined. The aim of this study is to assess the contributions of RSV versus influenza A virus in pathogenesis in upper airway inflammation in wheezy young children. We compared IL-6, IL-10,and IL-11 levels in NPA from non-asthmatic children with respiratory virus infections (RSV in 17 children and influenza A virus in 13 children) and asthmatic children with viral infections (RSV in 9 children, influenza virus A in 10 children), and 22 unaffected healthy children as the controls. Levels of IL-11 in NPA from asthmatic children were significantly higher than those from non-asthmatic children with RSV infection, and RSV infection enhanced the IL-11 production in NPA significantly compared to influenza A virus infection. Influenza A virus released more IL-8 than RSV and the level of IL-8 in NPA from asthmatic children was significantly higher than those from non-asthmatic children with influenza A virus infection. Nasopharyngeal epithelium in asthmatic children released more IL-6 than non-asthmatic children with either virus infection. In conclusion, asthma enhanced IL-11 production in RSV infection rather than influenza A virus infection in early childhood. There was a trend toward for greater IL-6 production in RSV infection compared with influenza A virus infection.
