Physical properties of La1-xSrxCoO3

Polycrystalline Lal(1-x)Sr(x)CoO(3) (x = 0.15, 0.25, 0.3) bulk samples were prepared by the standard solid-state reaction method to study the magnetic properties. The structure of the samples were examined by the X-ray diffraction and by the X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and the analysis confirmed a single phase. By measuring the temperature dependence of inverse magnetic susceptibility, the Curie temperatures are determined to be 147, 217, 232 K for x = 0.15, 0.25, 0.3, respectively. The zero-field cooled magnetization measurements revealed a spin-glass-like behavior for the samples. The high-resolution neutron diffraction data exhibit a diffraction peak related with a long-range ordered ferromagnetic phase at low temperature. Our data demonstrate that ferromagnetic and spin-glass-like states coexist in the LSCO alloys, and the unusual magnetic properties in the alloy is attributed to the behaviors of ferromagnetic component of clusters embedded in the non-ferromagnetic matrix.
