초록
In this study, we examined a series of South Korean youth dramas that portrayed a youth-centered narratives and non-metropolitan areas as a backdrop in order to analyze the narratives and self-perception of the youth relating to their everyday lives and relationship. These are <When the Camellia Blooms>(KBS2), <Fight for My Way>(KBS2), and <Top Star Yu Baek-i>(tvN) respectively. These dramas have received a considerable attention from a wide variety of audiences including young generation in recent years. These cultural products, especially showed the lives of young people living in the neoliberal era, where capitalism is rampant, and also showed hope, friendship and emotional bonds through the interactions in their communities. We utilized Stuart Hall’s ‘encoding-decoding’ model, focusing on the identity formation and representation among others and also close textual analysis in analyzing the dramas and their various elements, including, but not limited to, the dialogues of protagonists, composition of places mediated by camera gaze, and sound. We also examined the implications of space and relationships of non-metropolitan youth, the similarities and differences between the virtual and the real, and what kind of social meaning and effect they have created. In addition, we also combined in-depth interviews to analyze vivid voices of the youth generation living in the non-metropolitan area, that helped exploring the lives, identities, relationships, and processes of local youths adapting to or articulating the metropolitan lifestyle in a context-specific fashion
