A Study on the Outdoor Craze as Material Culture: An Essay on the Analog Material Culture

초록

The purpose of this essay is to discuss the recent change in everyday life and sociocultural scene in the Korean society due to growing interest in leisure, including but not limited to, hiking and camping, bike riding and fitness, overseas tourism and luxury goods consumption. Together with the onset of the five-day workweek system, this craze signals a major shift in lifestyle. The government’s policy discussion about the cultural industry and tourism reflects the spreading sentiment. At the heart of this transition is the outdoor craze. Furthermore, this trend can be explained as a consumption culture in the era of neo-liberalism. This essay critically examines the material culture in Korea related to leisure or cultural politics of taste focusing on the outdoor craze as a unique sociocultural and media phenomenon. In doing so, a series of pertinent theoretical works, empirical and episodic approach were utilized to decode the contemporary Korean society.
