The Impact of Freediving Activities on Flow and Self-Efficacy by Applying Experience Economy

초록

In recent years, the paradigm of the tourism and leisure industry has shifted towards more dynamic forms of engagement, with freediving emerging as a rapidly growing segment. The necessity of this research is underscored by the unique characteristics of freediving, which unlike other competitive sports, focuses on personal achievement and flow in the experience. This study investigated the psychological impacts of freediving, applying the experience economy theory, on flow and self-efficacy, alongside the role of task goal orientation. Freediving’s unique focus on personal achievement and immersion differentiates it from other sports, making it an ideal subject for this exploration. Key findings include: the significant role of escapism in enhancing flow, indicating that distinct experiences from daily life are crucial for reaching a state of flow; the positive effect of flow on self-efficacy, suggesting flow experiences bolster personal capability beliefs; and the influence of freediving’s escapism, recreational-educational, and aesthetic aspects on self-efficacy, underscoring the comprehensive benefits of such experiences. However, task goal orientation’s expected moderating role was not significant. Overall, this research enhances academic perspectives on the experience economy’s psyhological effects through freediving. Furthermore, it provides practical implications for the development of programs aimed at maximizing the benefits of freediving, not only as a leisure activity but also as a means of personal growth and psychological enrichment.
