COVID-19 Pandemic and Economic Inequality : Focusing on Household Incomes and Wages

초록

The COVID-19 pandemic seems to change the world economy in many aspects. If measuring the economic shock in terms of the growth rate, South Korea would be the least affected country among the developed economies in the world. This study examines the changes in household income separately by the householder’s employment status. The household income distribution of the self-employed shifts positively in 2022, and the regression results also turn out consistent with the finding. Compared to the household income of permanent workers, that of the self-employed decreases significantly in 2020, widening the income gap, and then increases in 2022. In addition, the quantile regression results also show that the income inequality among self-employed households might be exacerbated. On the contrary, the distribution of household expenditure as well as consumption rarely changes during the period. While the distribution of monthly salaries does not change much, that of hourly wages changes negatively in 2020, then recovering in 2021. However, the estimation results show that the various wage gaps do not change significantly during the pandemic.
