A Framework for Prioritizing ICT Component Technologies in Service Robots: Evidence from Patent and Bibliometric Indicators

Service robots have emerged as a key technological solution to societal challenges such as workforce shortages and population aging. Despite the growing integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in service robotics, existing research has largely focused on individual technologies, leaving a gap in comprehensive cross-technology assessment. This study developed a systematic framework to evaluate ICT component technologies in service robotics using four core indicators: technological impact, importance, innovativeness, and growth. The data were collected from the Web of Science, Google Patents, market research reports, and robot manufacturers’ product documentation. One hundred and eight ICT component technologies were identified and classified into foundational and applied technologies based on the technology life-cycle analysis of recent three-year patent trends, and analyzed using a dual-criteria prioritization framework. Among foundational technologies, cloud computing, edge computing, augmented reality, facial expression recognition, and visual simultaneous localization and mapping were assigned high overall priority. Among the applied technologies, artificial intelligence computing, particle swarm optimization, and collision detection were identified as high-priority technologies. This study contributes a replicable multi-indicator framework for technology portfolio analysis and offers practical guidance for setting research and development investment priorities and formulating technology strategies for policymakers and robotics firms.
