Wet spinning of PLA/silver nanoparticles composite

As Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) is one of the most promising biodegradable polymers, it has attracted many researchers due to its mechanical property, thermoplastic processibility and biological properties. Silver has a long history of successful medical and public health use and been claimed to kill many different disease organisms due to its nano-size and larger total surface area per unit volume. Moreover, silver is skin friendly and does not cause skin irritation. We prepared PLA/silver nanoparticles fibers by the wet spinning process. Although these fibers had a diameter of micron scale, they exhibited excellent mechanical properties from SEM and tensile strength analysis. Also, these fibers had excellent antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and K. Pneumoniae. Therefore, PLA/silver nanoparticles fibers have great potential for the medical applications.
