A study of Chinese poetry on the subject of Lee Bong-chang

초록

Lee Bong-chang’s anti-Japanese uprising took place on January 8, 1932. Shortly after the uprising, numerous Chinese media outlets lauded his actions, publishing articles, editorials, character reviews, cartoons, and photographs that depicted him as a patriot and martyr. Despite occurring outside of China, the uprising significantly impacted Chinese society at the time, prompting many Chinese writers to compose poetry centered on Lee. This thesis provides a comprehensive translation and analysis of all extant poems inspired by Lee Bong-chang. At the time, the Chinese public actively praised Lee as a symbol of anti-Japanese patriotism and a spirit of sacrifice amidst a national crisis, even though relations between the Korean and Chinese people were strained. Consequently, these poems initially expressed mourning, praise, and regret over the failure of Lee’s heroic mission. Furthermore, they conveyed a sense of camaraderie, solidarity, and shared struggle, reflecting the empathy of those who viewed themselves as fellow victims of imperial aggression. To effectively communicate these perceptions and emotions to the Chinese public, the poets employed diverse rhetorical techniques. Most notably, Lee was symbolized through and compared to familiar figures from Chinese history. The imagery primarily draws upon Jing Ke (荊軻) and Zhang Liang (張良), who epitomize righteousness and heroism. Additionally, figures such as Nie Zheng (聶政), Yao Li (要離), Yu Rang (豫讓), Nan Ba (南八), Lin Xiang-ru (藺相如), Tang Ju (唐雎), Shen Bao-xu (申包胥), and Xiang Yu (項羽) were utilized to illustrate true leadership and moral fortitude. Ultimately, these poems sought to foster Chinese enlightenment and impart vital historical lessons.
