In this paper, a new power management strategy for a series hybrid electric vehicle is presented. The proposed strategy estimates the equivalent fuel consumption of electric energy using the compensation concept considering highest efficiency point of the engine-generator as well as the charge/discharge efficiency of the battery at the current time. This method is valid for only the SHEV configuration in which the battery is charged by the engine-generator at its highest efficiency. The cost function consists of the actual fuel energy representing the efficiency of the engine-generator and the equivalent fuel energy representing the efficiency of the battery and energy conversion. Therefore, the proposed PMS provides an optimal solution from the energy efficiency point of view. A vehicle model is developed using AVL Cruise and Matlab/Simulink program to represent characteristics of a SHEV truck and used to simulate and verify the proposed control algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
