Preparation and Characterization of Silk-Apatite Nanocomposites

For a long time, silk fibroin has been used in various fields due to its excellent properties such as mechanical strength, elasticity, handle, luster, and so on. Nowadays, silk fibroin has attracted much attention in the field of medical applications. It is well known that the poor mechanical strength of calcium phosphates prevents us from expanding their applications, although they are highly biocompatible, so that many researchers have made attempts to fabricate the calcium phosphate/polymer composites to improve their practical usages. In this study, silk fibroin was dissolved in CaCl2/C2H5OH/H2O (1:2:8 molar ratio), which followed by dropping Na2HPO4 with stirring. The obtained precipitates were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). With this facile method, it was fabricated the silk fibroin/calcium phosphate composites.
