Conceptualization of Team Insecurity

초록

The team-based structure of contemporary organizations has resulted in frequent reorganization and downsizing of work teams. While a vast amount of research has investigated the effect of employee job insecurity, little attention has been paid to the insecurity of a team. To fill this gap, we propose “team insecurity” as a new construct. We define team insecurity as cognitive and affective perceptions of team members concerning threats to the continuity of their team. Drawing on the team crisis management literature, we posit that team insecurity consists of sub-dimensions such as team restructuring, team relative status, team composition, and team affective reactions. Furthermore, grounded in social information processing theory, we postulate that team insecurity perceptions emerge as a team climate construct because team members exchange information and develop a sense-making process within the team. Lastly, we conceptually differentiate team insecurity and team insecurity climate from related individual (i.e., job insecurity, negative affect, team identity, team commitment) and team (i.e., group neuroticism, team conflict, group morale, negative group affective tone)-level constructs. As the first scholarly attempt to conceptualize the construct of team insecurity, this study provides theoretical and practical implications for team research.
