Development of the Field-based Communication Competency Scale for College Graduates

초록

This study aimed to develop a model of field-based communication competency and to validate an instrument that was designed to measure communication competency. Unlike previous instruments, this study developed a scale to be evaluated by college graduates’ superiors and colleagues in order to measure their communication competency. First of all, the literature on communication competency was reviewed and the construct was operationalized. A series of Focus Group Interviews with competency and HRD field experts were conducted. Then a model of communication competency with three sub-constructs was identified and a pool of 15 items was developed to measure encoding, decoding, and interaction. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted using a dataset that was collected from 135 college graduates studying in graduate schools and 290 college graduates working in organizations. Results suggest that the communication competency instrument was reliable and valid. If the factor structure of this scale is consistently found to be valid in subsequent studies, it can be used to evaluate effectiveness of college education in terms of core competences and to analyse effects of communication competency on organizational performance with empirical research.
