Life Satisfaction among Marriage-Immigrant Women: Focusing on Social Context and Social Discrimination

초록

This study examined effects of individual-level factors and contextual factors on life satisfaction among marriage-immigrant women in Korea. Using a data from the 2009 Multicultural Families Survey, a series of multi-level analyses were performed. The first analysis used a variable indicating experience of social discrimination among marriage- immigrant women as a dependent variable. In the second analysis, life satisfaction was a dependent variable and the experience of social discrimination was included as one of individual-level predictors. The results revealed that the likelihood of experiencing social discrimination and satisfying with life among marriage-immigrant women varied across regions. The results of the first analysis revealed that two contextual factors, population density and the proportion of multicultural families in the area, had positive effects on the likelihood of experiencing social exclusion. Regarding life satisfaction, marriage-immigrantsʼ socio-demographic factors, perceptions of householdʼs economic status, Korean language skills, social networks, self-rated health, and perceived relationship with the husband were significant individual-level factors. In addition, there was a significant interaction between experience of social discrimination and population density in explaining life satisfaction. Implications for future research and social policies were discussed.
