It has been disputable to analyze the presence of labial onsets with or without the glide [w] in modern Mandarin Chinese. In order to resolve the problem, the authors resort to the theory of 'fanqie'. The authors propose that the labial consonants without the glide [w] as the underlying form and the ones with the glide [w] as the variants of them. By applying a set of constrains, formulated in (7) of this article, the authors identify the vowels which can combine the labial consonants with glide [w]. In this way, this article explains why the labial consonants with glide [w] can only appear before vowel /u/ or /ə/, while not before others.
