The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of suicidal ideation in the elderly on the basis of social capital theory and ecological model. This study was secondary analysis based on the data from the 2015 10th Korea welfare panel study (KOWEPS) with the subjects 4,814 elderly aged over 65. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, Rao-Scott chi-square test, t-test and logistic regression to take account of complex samples analysis with the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. 3.6% of subjects had the experiences of suicidal ideation. There were significant differences in gender, living arrangements, recipient of basic livelihood security, perceived health status, chronic disease, disability, depression, presence of spouse, satisfaction in family relationship, satisfaction in social relationship between elderly who thought of suicide and elderly who did not think. It was determined that influencing factors included depression, recipient of basic livelihood security, satisfaction in family relationship. Based on these results, nursing strategies focusing on managing the depression and enhancing the satisfaction in family relationships are needed to prevent suicide for the elderly.
