초록

This article analyzes the various forms of death in Kim Ae-ran’s short stories. Through the aspect of death in her work, we will reveal what values and meanings are presented, and through this, we will try to understand Kim Ae-ran’s perception of death and worldview. In the story of ‘Noh Chan-sung and Evan’ the topic of suicide is addressed. The character(s) in the work agonize between responsibility and burden, and then eventually do their part to reduce the burden that will be left to others by killing themselves. Through this work, Kim Ae-ran shows the tragedy and helplessness in the lives of the socially weak. In ‘The Night There, The Song Here,’ Myeonghwa, a smuggler, died of stomach cancer after enduring harsh labor for a living. Through her work, Kim Ae-ran delicately depicts the effects of disease and death on human relations and psychology, revealing the pain when people in the lowest reaches of society face death. In ‘Where Do You Want to Go,’ Kim Ae-ran describes the pain caused by the Sewol Ferry disaster and the process of overcoming it. Death is not only an individual’s experience, but also a social event. Through this work, Kim Ae-ran reflects not only the mourning of individuals, but also the mourning and healing of a whole society facing disaster. Kim Ae-ran shows the social and cultural meaning of death through novels. Death goes beyond just individual problems, and is closely connected with social relationships, responsibilities, and roles within groups. Kim Ae-ran tries to understand personal pain and conflict in a social context, and through death, she reveals social oppression and inequality. In this process, death is no longer an individual problem, but appears as a result of interaction with social structures.
