An Evaluation of the English native Instructor Program of national universities of Education

초록

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to provide systematic English language training to pre-service teachers in Korea. This awareness has been propelled by the Ministry of Education (MOE) with its teaching English through English (TETE) policy aimed at the development of teachers' English language proficiency. In addition to that, the MOE, as one of its primary initiatives, has funded the English Native Instructor Program (ENIP) since 2000, hiring two native instructors for each of 11 national universities of education in Korea. Since its inception, the ENIP has exerted a considerable amount of influence on these schools. Accordingly, it is high time to document and evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the program in promoting English proficiency of prospective teachers at these universities. The present study conducted a survey to students and faculty at these universities to identify the benefits and limitations of the program. The results show that both the students and the faculty were highly satisfied with the ENIP. More detailed findings of the study are reported and analyzed, and their pedagogical implications are discussed.
