Exploring the Experiences of Child Protection Workers with the Needs Assessment in Children Requiring Protection

초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of child protection workers in conducting needs assessments of children requiring protection, and to identify challenges and ways to improve them. For the purpose of the study, focus group interviews were conducted with 10 child protection workers. The results showed that, first, the difficulties of the needs assessment process were ‘needs assessment tools that are difficult to determine protective measures’, ‘redundancy and procedural complexity of questions’, ‘tools are not suitable for child development’, ‘difficulty in making objective judgments’. Second, the suggestions for improving the needs assessment process were ‘needs assessment to determine protective measures’, ‘simplification of assessment tools’, ‘target-friendly assessment that considers child development’ and ‘questions that allow objective assessment and various situational skills’. The result of this study are expected to serve as a basis for developing support measures to enhance the effectiveness of child protection workers' work and strengthen their capacity to provide appropriate services considering the best interests of children. In particular, it is significant in that it lays the foundation for ensuring the welfare and safety of children and suggests practical directions for improvement to connect them with appropriate services that take into account their development.
