Fuel Cell System Operating Conditions to Minimize Hydrogen Fuel Cell Consumption in Vehicle Applications

초록

In a fuel cell electric vehicle(FCEV), a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack and balance of plant(BOP) are widely used for its propulsion system. The efficiency of the fuel cell system is dominated by the operating conditionsadjusted by BOP. The purpose of this study aims at developing a fuel cell system operating conditions optimization methodologyto reduce hydrogen fuel consumption. A fuel cell system model, with electrochemical fuel cell stack modeling, was employed toanalyze the system efficiency. The hydrogen consumption is estimated by the vehicle level simulation with fuel cell and batterypower split control algorithm. The design variables are oxygen stoichiometric ratio, stack temperature, anode pressure andmaximum efficiency power value. The results verify that optimal operating conditions can reduce 12% the hydrogen fuelconsumption of FCEV comparing basic operating conditions.
