지상파 방송프로그램에 재현된 자기통치 공간으로서의 서울: 재현 공간으로서의 대도시와 각자도생(各自圖生)하는 청년들

초록

<Kyungsung Fantasy> and <Young People Live There> are broadcast contents that pay attention to the image and reality of Seoul. <Gyeongseong Fantasy>, which aired on Ulsan MBC, plans a trip to Seoul to achieve the fantasy of young people living in rural areas. This content reproduces “Seoul” as a “fantasy” city where dreams and hopes exist, but also shows the flip side. A reenactment of urban reality is also shown in EBS’s documentary, <Young People Live There>. The two programs are telling stories about the lives of young people, residing in Seoul. The shows feature young people who are not securely guaranteed their right to live in Seoul, highlighting the realistic lives of individuals, living alone in Seoul. Both share a common ground in that they depict Seoul in a certain way, the capital of South Korea. This is especially true in that it is being reproduced as a interconnected image of the dreams of the city and young people, and that it fully reveals the reality. However, these parts include the point where space is used as a discourse to mask the contradictions of neo-liberalism and the process by which it works as a governing mechanism for the audience. We tried to critically analyze the image of Seoul, represented by the media and the illusion it creates, through the panorama of <Gyeongseong Fantasy>, and the <Young People Live There>, which realistically depicts the space called Seoul. We tried to analyze the city’s function in a dense and harsh real-world by combining textual analysis of the programs with in-depth interviews of viewers in their 2030s. We also utilized Henri Lefevbre and David Harvey’s theoretical frameworks of representing space and relational space. This is due to Harvey’s discussion on neo-liberalism and space is useful to explain the function of Seoul, influenced by the development of neo-liberalism. Lefévbre also explains the city’s characteristics that make people forget the contradictions of everyday life. Therefore, one may argue that two scholars’ discussions could provide useful observations for reproducing Seoul as a fantasy space and analyzing the process of forgetting the structural contradictions of society.
